The goal of DTG is to provide a method for translating Bloom’s Taxonomy-based assessments to currently existing grade reporting systems. The process should be seamless insofar as the non-educator is concerned. The method requires minimal additional work on behalf of the educator while giving them the freedom to adjust rigor to suit the needs of each individual or class without artificially altering grades. The resulting grade is then a reflection as to the student’s understanding of the material with respect to Bloom’s Taxonomy and not merely a percentage completed of material that may vary in difficulty dependent on the amount of rigor an instructor introduces into the classroom. It now becomes possible for a student taking a more “difficult” instructor to achieve the same grade as would be gained from an “easier” teacher. It would even become preferable in some cases to take a more challenging teacher to increase one’s knowledge of the subject without sacrificing the grade point average. In short, Differentiated Tiered Grading is “grading that makes sense”.
